Available for groups or individuals, off site or in my studio, as workshops (described below) or ongoing classes. Students can bring materials or I can provide them for a modest fee. I work with each student to answer questions and give hands on help. Creating Art is FUN! You can “lose yourself” and “find yourself” in the process!
Drawing
Objective. Practice drawing basics and produce a finished work. A four hour class.
Activities. I will talk about the history of drawing and the materials we will use in class, willow charcoal and conte crayon. “Making Marks” is a series of exercises to become familiar with the tools, training the eye and hand to create a wide variety of lines and shapes. We will review simple perspective and portraiture basics. We will close the class by “studying the masters” and produce a work of the student’s choosing.
Supplies. Conte crayons, kneadable erasers, variety of drawing papers. Can be provided by the instructor for $5,
Pastel
Objective. Practice pastel basics and produce a finished work.
Activities. I will talk about the history of pastel and the materials available. Reference materials and suppliers will be covered. We will “Make Marks” on pastel paper and review the approaches used to make color and value selection. We will explore abstract shapes and close the class by completing a step-by-step finished pastel drawing.
Supplies. Variety of pastel sticks, the more the better! Pastel Papers
Manga/Anime
Objective. Practice the basics of creating animated cartoon characters.
Activities. Have fun and develop a truly magnificent cartoon superhero. We’ll start with the face of our comic hero and give it expression. A body in action, first in pencil and then finished in ink will be the result of this class. Reference comic book characters will be available or bring you own!
Supplies. Pencils and gum eraser, Drawing papers and Sharpie Ink Pens.
Japanese Large Scale Calligraphy
Objective. The class will cover the history of Japanese Calligraphy and the tools and supplies of the art.
Activities. We will practice the basic brush strokes and produce several finished pieces of large scale calligraphy
Supplies.
Brush. Japanese or Chinese, bamboo handle, brush length around 1 1/2 inch or larger. Black ink and small mixing bowl. Variety of paper for practice and finished work. (newsprint, computer paper, rice papers)
